Gemfields
Elena Basaglia has over 15 years’ experience in the jewellery industry, beginning her career in jewellery retail first in Milan and subsequently in London. Elena studied at the L.A.C. Art College in Milan, where she wrote a dissertation on jewellery in the Art Deco period. Elena studied at the Gemological Institute of America in New York, where she graduated with a Graduate Gemologist Diploma in 2006. Elena’s considerable experience in the jewellery industry was accumulated whilst working for some of the world’s most recognisable international jewellery brands, including Fabergé, which she joined in 2011 as the manager of the Harrods concession.
In 2014, Elena moved from Fabergé to Gemfields to become Sales Manager for Europe and UK, leveraging her knowledge of the gemstone field, her passion for gemmology and her valuable connections within the luxury world. Elena is currently Manager of Gemfields’ Downstream, providing specialist knowledge and support to various departments within Gemfields Group, and to the wider coloured gemstone industry.
In her present role of Manager of Gemfields Downstream, Elena actively follows the path of Gemfields’ cut & polished gemstones, from dealers to clients, whilst also liaising with the key entities of the gemstone trade, such as auction houses, museums, and laboratories, etc.
More recently Algy has been heavily engaged in bringing the Ethiopian exploration project into bulk sampling phase, and following the recent evacuation of the project due to civil commotion, has been coordinating Gemfields’ efforts to re-enter the license area and resume operations. Algy has become increasingly involved in Gemfields’ activities in Madagascar.
Algy has an MSc in Strategic Management from Cass Business School in London, and a Foundation in Gemmology from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. Algy is a keen travel photographer, musician and sportsman.
