CRPG NANCY
Gaston Giuliani was born on 24th January 1954 in France. He studied geology at the University of Nancy from 1973 until 1982 when he obtained his PhD. In 1985 he reached the position of senior researcher at the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) in Paris and subsequently became the director of research at the same institute in 1999, a position he still holds to this day. During his time as a senior researcher Gaston completed his thesis on Habilitation to Manage Research in 1997. He is also a member of the Geosciences Environment in Toulouse unit and the “Centre de Recherches Pétrographiques et Géochimiques” in Nancy.
Gaston is recognized as one of the foremost authorities in geology-geochemistry working directly from the field to the laboratory. During his career his research has covered various topics including:
- Fluid inclusions and stable isotopes applied to Metallogeny (tin, tungsten, molybdenum, gold, beryllium).
- Geology and genesis of Gemstone deposits (emerald, ruby and sapphire, tsavorite, spinel, demantoid, tanzanite, tourmaline).
- Emerald deposits in Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Pakistan, Madagascar.
- Archeology and origin of emerald artefacts by isotopic analysis.
- Corundum deposits in Madagascar.
- Ruby deposits in marbles from Asia and east Africa.
- Tsavorite deposits related to the Mozambican metamorphic belt.
- Corundum deposits related to alkali basalts.
